Montage Project:

 

 

In this project students were introduced to modernist concepts of montage in film, collage in art, and the cut-up method in literature.  The project had several componenets, including the creation of a text using Surrealist Word Games, such as Exquisite Corpse and the Latent News.  Students then took their cut-up texts into the recording studio to create a voice over track for their montage film.  Using video taken in and out of class, students create a montage film in which the various shots and cuts correspond exactly to the rhythm and cadence of the voice over track.

PROJECT TWO:  Hip Hop Montage/ Hard Cuts, Transitions, and Tools in Final Cut Pro- Using footage from the scavenger hunt, students will create a video art project inspired by Darren Aronofsky (Pi and Requiem for a Dream), who coined the term Hip Hop Montage.   For one thing, Hip Hop Montage has nothing to do with Hip Hop, per se.  To understand what Hip Hop Montage is, one must know what the word montage means.  Montage is a technique in film editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information.  When shots in a montage are brief in duration (e.g. 3 seconds or less), it is called fast cutting, which can be used to convey a lot of information very quickly, or to imply either energy or chaos. Fast cutting is also frequently used when shooting dialogue between two or more characters, changing the viewer's perspective to either focus on the reaction of another character's dialog, or to bring to attention the non-verbal actions of the speaking character.  One famous example of fast cutting is the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho (1960). A Hip Hop Montage is a subset of fast cutting used in film to portray a complex action through a rapid series of simple actions in fast motion.  The term Hip Hop is used in conjunction with this sort of montage due to the rapidity of the film cuts; a fast rhythm, like Hip Hop music.  We will create a video art piece using the technique of Hip Hop Montage to cut up and reassemble video shot in the scavenger hunt.  Refer specifically to Gary Hill’s Around and About for inspiration.  We will match a voice over track to a montage of shots, being careful to keep the rhythm of the words matched to the rhythm of shots

Green Screen Project

In this project students were introduced to green screen technology in an art practice.

PROJECT FOUR:  THE CLONE WAR- Students will each create a storyboard/screenplay for a green screen project.  The storyboard must be at least 6 frames/cells, but no more than 12.  There must be at least one long/medium shot, one medium shot, and two close ups.   The topic of PROJECT FOUR is cloning.  Our society is grappling with the ethics and safety of cloning, but I want you to imagine that you have successfully cloned yourself.  I want you to imagine what kind of discussions you and your clone might have.  Will you make deals with your clone?  Maybe your clone will help you with chores or schoolwork in return for you doing something for your clone?  Maybe you will fight with your clone over who is the real and who is the copy?  Maybe your clone makes you work for him/her, instead of the other way around?  Maybe your clone threatens to leave and start a new life?  Maybe you and your clone discuss deep philosophic ideas?  Maybe you and your clone become best friends? You must research cloning and find one article in the news or from a scholarly journal that discusses the ethics of cloning.  Bring in your research to class and be prepared to discuss.  Once you have an idea, you will be turning it into a script and a storyboard.  You are the lead actor(s) and you are going to have a discussion with yourself using Green Screen Technology.  Draw the storyboard out on paper.  Make sense of your story using visuals.  Compose long shots, medium shots, and close ups to create drama.   In the HD TV Studios and using SU provided cameras, shoot footage in front of the Green Screen that reflects the storyboard and script.  Using After Effects and/or Motion, key out the green and leave an erased background.  Then assemble you footage in Final Cut Pro.  The background can be footage from PROJECTS TWO/THREE .  The final project must be at least 30 seconds long.

Visual Music/Music Video

 

 

 

In this project students made video art in a painterly fashion, experimenting with abstraction and design principles/elements.

 

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT/SCREENING: 

 

PROJECT THREE:  Students will use their Hip Hop Montage as a foundation for a new Video Art Piece based on the Visual Music of Jordan Belson, Stan Brakhage, and Oskar Fischinger.   Students will experiment with Final Cut Pro Effects, Filters, Composting Effects, and Mattes to create abstract/semi-abstract images out of representational video footage.  Students will also learn how to import sound/music into Final Cut Pro and then match the video edits to the imported sound/music.  The finished product will be a piece of Visual Music.

  • Very fun and witty when creating various videos. Loved Screening.

What aspects of instruction did you like least?

 

  • Handling old cameras that cost more than tuition.

  • Some of the material was a bit difficult.

  • That there is a lot of work to complete in a short amount of time.

  • Sometimes the videos shown class are boring and take up work time.

  • Had fun!

  • The class has been really helpful, i learned a lot. And enjoyed the easy going, casual atmosphere of class.

  • It is really refreshing when a teacher has this much commitment and drive to help students create the best work that they can create.
