Lighthole

Curated by Baltimore-based artist and organizer Victor F. De M. Torres, LIGHTHOLE – a monthly showcase in Baltimore, Maryland, for new media/intermedia/interdisciplinary artists – is designed as a snapshot of human perception, connecting ancient concepts to contemporary discoveries through the insightful lens of visual culture.

Our aim is to establish a destination in Baltimore for artworks that incorporate technology either through video, sound, or the body. We also see LIGHTHOLE as a resource, providing a safe space for the representation of humans of non-normative self-identifications.

LIGHTHOLE is simultaneously a print journal of new media art,ᅠfocused mainly on contributions by artists who have a passion for expanding visual, sonic, bodily as well as literary representations.

C. Tara and David Gladden presented their performance, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters performed at Lighthole in Baltimore MD as part of the “Pits” performance series  on April, 8 2016.

The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters by C. Tara & David Gladden

A

dream grip

of uninvited fantasy.

This heavy chest,

a muted scream.

I live here-

in suspended time.

I hear now-

unseen intruders.

They feel their way

in the dark,

in this pit

of gravity resistance.

The performer is bathed in blue light.  She is lying down on a silver mylar bed, covered by a silver mylar blanket.  She has halved Ping-Pong balls over her eyes.  She is wearing a head-set microphone and singing wirelessly into an amplifier.  She sings so effortlessly and impassively that the viewer could be unsure from where exactly the sound source is coming.  She is somniloquent.  She is restless. She casts off her blanket and rises.  She wanders about the space.  She has never stopped singing.  She mixes among the audience.  She is still singing. She strays beyond the signal of her headset microphone.  Her voice crackles in and out from the amplifier. She is gone.  There is only static.

This work references the darkness of subconscious experience; phenomena such as sleep paralysis, possession, and altered states.  This darkness is a pit:  of resistance, of fear, of awareness without control.  However, it is also a place where one can confront the darkness, where one can emerge with awareness of deeply buried secrets; a pit of hell, of confrontation, a power struggle, but also the pit of a mine, a deep well, and ultimately for better or worse, a place for transformation.
